In no other session has this been more true. E. and B. came in becuase Mom wanted some images of daughter in her crown after she had been crowned Winter Ball Queen (I hope I have that right)! First...I'm a TOTAL sucker for tiaras and believe every woman should own at least one! Second...I'm an even bigger sucker for people who can laugh at themselves and boy did we do a lot of laughing!

B. is so beautiful...in fact more beautiful than I think she realizes. I think you will agree her eyes are mesmerizing and so unusually gorgeous. I am so happy to have captured these images. Honestly...I came back from the shoot uploaded the images and my heart practically jumped out of my chest with joy at what we had captured!

Sweet Little Jackson - Trinidad, CO Newborn Photographer

Welcome precious little Jackson to the world! The first little boy I've photographed in awhile. And what an absolute doll he was...hardly a peep out of him.

So I apologize for my long absence, but I was enjoying a bit of a vacation...just a bit! I had the pleasure of welcoming my brand new niece into the world at 12:02 pm on December 31, 2009. To witness a new life come into the world; what an amazing experience which I don't think I'll ever tire of!

Along with welcoming a new life...and of course documenting it in photos to the FULLEST...yea...like 1,000 images full...I enjoyed spending time with my "other" niece and her BFF!

All in all I left with more photos than I know what to do with...literally!!

A sneak peek for all of you...and of course my sister and her husband...and my parents and his parents and...well all of our family and friends!

But...first the most sincere thank you to my unbelievable sister and her husband for allowing me to capture these wonderful images. Thanks guys for letting me be a part of your miracle!

I had the pleasure of photographing a wonderful family this week! My first photosession since going full time and it couldn't have been easier. They were a great family, very happy and easy to work with. AND to top it all off an adorable little girl who seemed to LOVE getting her photograph taken! I enjoyed the the session from start to finish.

A Gorgeous Mommy-To-Be - Raton Maternity Photographer

I often wonder how much longer it will be before I grow weary of my job!! I mean, honestly, I can hardly believe I call this "work". I absolutely adore what I do! I meet wonderful people, with wonderful stories. Some I know before I'm hired to photograph them and some are complete strangers. But whichever the case I learn something new and beautiful about each and every one of them!

Miss Camery was wonderful enough to allow me to photograph her for my portfolio. Soon you will see her beautiful photographs gracing my website! I'm not sure I could have been any luckier!

This is the beautiful Becky Doherty from Becky Doherty Photography...and her gorgeous family! I was honored when Becky contacted me and booked a session...but heck was I nervous! It's so hard to photograph another photographer, because THEY KNOW what you're supposed to be doing!

Anyhow, the weather held out for us...although I imagine they are now under snow! It was simply wonderful lighting as you can see! The setting was breathtaking and I'm having a bit of location envy for all of the wonderful places Becky has to shoot at!

Flu 2009 appears to have left our home!

Oh my goodness! I can't tell you how over the moon I am this week! I officially have all three children back at school and the baby seems to have come through with flying colors!

Absolutely the worst bout of illness I can remember this family going through in a long while and I don't wish to revisit it any time soon!

I have become even more fanatic about washing hands and using hand sanitizer...but that's not a bad thing right?

So, it looks like once again I am trucking down the road. Now, if only I had all the time I needed to catch back up! Until such time you will be reading late email messages from me, and reading blog posts written at 1 am. But, a photographers got to do what a photographers got to do!

And since no blog post is complete without a few images, here are some of my GORGEOUS cliens from the Danielson Designs Holiday Event in Trinidad, Colorado this past weekend. AND...if you like what you see and are in need of holiday cards, gifts or just an updated family photo it is not too late to schedule a time for your family on November 7, 2009. Gorgeous Walsenburg Senior - Southern Colorado Senior Photographer

freezing rain....check
frigid temperature....check
heavy fog....check
stunning location....you better believe it!

OK...so minus the freezing rain, fog, 24 degree temperatures and ice...this was an unbelieveable senior session! I traveled up to Walsenburg, CO this past weekend for a much anticipated shoot! I LOVE...did I say LOVE...senior sessions! They are always so happy and up for ANYTHING!!! I think it has to do with the fact that they are on the verge venturing out into the wide world on their own!

Anyhow...I digress...the session was terrific. We got a little of this, a little of that, a few horses, a dog and an antique loveseat in the middle of an alfalfa field!

What? Yea...she's sitting in a loveseat in her field...wanna make something of it?

And she looks so beautiful I think she could SERIOUSLY be a sock model...is Tyra looking for one of those??

Enough, enough already, I'm sure I have you LOL'ing....hehehe!

More Family Fun and Freezing Temps - Raton/Trinidad Family Photographer

This session has been in the works for some time....like months! So you can say I was pretty much completely bummed when we've had good weather for MONTHS and the one day we have scheduled for a photosession...and the ONLY day the whole family is going to be in town it's...well...29 degrees!

The back up plan was to shoot in this family's house and I packed the car with the mobile studio to be sure we had everything we might need for an indoor session with 10 people.

Imagine my utmost joy when they said they were willing to try to get some outdoor shots!! The colors were stunning! It would have pained me to drive away without a single outdoor image.

So we packed the family in two trucks, with heaters on full blast, about 100 yards down the driveway. Each family took their turn in the cold and then hopped back in the car to warm up before the next photo!

All things considered the cold wasn't too bad at all...and I think you'll agree that it was well worth it!!

Thank you Jodi to you and your wonderful family! I had a blast despite nasty ole' Mother Nature. And I think you'll agree that it was all worth it! We definitely would have missed a GREAT opportunity had we NOT gotten a little chilly! Enjoy your sneak peek!

An Amazing Family - Trinidad/Raton Family Photographer

Wow...just wow! What an amazing photosession I had this morning.

The photosession was a gift for Nana for her birthday from her children! They surprised her at her party last night and I think she was delighted with their thoughtfulness!

I met with the family, all 16 of them, in Trinidad's beautiful Kit Carson Park. Eight of them were children under 12 years old and honestly I was prepared for a little bit of mayhem. Boy was I delighted to meet, not only 8 beautiful, respectful and happy children, but 3 handsome and funny dads, 3 gorgeous moms, a dashing Papa and a wonderfully beautiful, loving, sweet and joyful Nana who obviously loves her family! And I'm NOT over exaggerating on any of that!

It gave me an all over warm feeling to meet and photograph each one of them! They were kind and loving towards each other and laughed the entire time! I hope it was as fun as experience for them as it was for me!

ummm..could I use any more exclamation points!!!

To you all...thank you from the bottom of my heart! Meeting and photographing your family reassures me that I do in fact have the best job in the whole world! While I will try to get a few more images up for you sneak peek...I couldn't wait to get these up for you to look at! I just can't say how lovely your family is! How lucky each of you truly are!!

Fashion Fridays - Raton/Trinidad Senior Photographer

Time for another installment of Fashion Fridays. This week's What to Wear Guide is directed towards Senior Gals!

2010 Seniors are busy taking their photographs and at the studio we are having a BLAST doing it!

A few tips for seniors (and anybody really) wanting to look their best for their photosession...

1. DON'T forget to iron your clothes! I can do some magic...but ironing after the fact is NOT one of them!
2. DON'T be afraid of color! Especially in the fall when leaves are starting to change and our backdrops tend to be a bit more bland...spice up your photos with a blast of bright color.
3. Bring different styles. If you dress differently for different occasions...don't be afraid to express ALL of those sides of you.
4. Last...be sure to be YOU! The following styles are just to give you some ideas...but if they're NOT you, that's ok too!

I don't think I've EVER laughed as much as I did at this senior session!!! We had so much fun! Went to some of my favorite locations and came up with some great shots!! Oh...and we ALMOST forgot the green chair which would have been a shame because we came up with some really great stuff.

Fashion Fridays - Raton/Trinidad Family Photographer

Time for another installment of Fashion Fridays!

The studio has been VERY busy booking family sessions! And not just a families of 4 or 5...but extended family of 11, 14 and 21 people! WOW!

So...what does a large group wear? I like to give everybody and opportunity to express their personal style within certain parameters. My suggestion is to set a color palette of 4 colors. Then, everybody can decide what to wear within that color palette. Easy peasy!

The most important thing is for everybody to be comfortable and to be themselves! This simple strategy ensures cohesive, classy family images with personal choice and visual interest!

Some Blog Love for My Baby - Raton/Trinidad Children's Photographer

So I have this IMPOSSIBLE client! He happens to be my soon-to-be two year old!! This kid has some serious cameraphobia due in part to the fact that his mother has photographed every minute of his existence. He has very little patience with me.

But...being that he is growing so fast...and today will be the day of his first haircut (I know, I know)...I had to capture him in his last stages of babyhood!

So, just one for now! Oh...and I just adore this new location! We won't have it for much longer I can feel the snow coming...

My clients are always asking..."What should we wear to our photosession?" In my mind I have all these great ideas and suggestions, but find it hard to clearly explain what I recommend.

So...without further ado I present to you....FASHION FRIDAYS!!! Every Friday I will post a "What to Wear Guide". Some will focus on the family, some on childen, some on seniors and so on. What I want to provide for you is a collection of ideas for you to choose from and draw inspiration.

Now...am I saying you HAVE to wear this in order to get some great images. No! But use the ideas and the concepts to help you make good clothing choices for your photosession! If you absolutely HAVE to have what is suggested, all designers will be indicated, and the clothing will be available (quanities and sizes may be limited) at the time the guide is posted.

Kaycie, has been with me since I first started this endeavor more than a year ago. It's always been planned that I would do her senior session wehn the time came...and waahooo that time is now!!

We had a marathon photosession, but it is so easy with her! I can completely act like the dork I am...in fact even running into poles...and she doesn't judge me too badly! (my eye still hurts from that one!)

I've been so busy recently that I haven't had a chance to blog these photos...but I couldn't put it off any longer!

As you may know we had a big Father's Day Photo and Frame Event at Danielson Designs in Trinidad, CO. As you may also know Danielson's has the BEST little cafe right next door (anybody up for an engagement session??? I've got great ideas for this location!!). Anyhow, we had a yummy lunch there and it looked so beautiful I had to snap a few quick shots before we could dig in!

We are....RATON! - NM Children's Photographer

Growing up in a miliary family allowed me many wonderful opportunities. However, the constant moving never really allowed me to grow up with any one group of friends. I seemed to know everybody kind of and nobody really well.

It is the one thing I enjoy most about small town living. And part of the reason I enjoy watching my kids play sports. The boys below are the same boys my son learned to play football with, and will be the same boys he plays his final high school baseball game with in eight short years.

How we got so lucky, with a group of terrific kids, I will never know. But it is a joy to see them growing into young men with respect for themselves, their team and their families. And they play a mean game of baseball too!

I feel especially lucky each All Star season, when their parents graciously allow me to do something a little more artistic with their team photos. I love the scrappy feel the black and white image gives the team and I adore their attitudes!

Thank you boys for allowing me to take your team photos...and play tough!

Little Miss Gabriella - New Mexico & Colorado Newborn Photographer

Every time I have the pleasure of photographing somebody I thank my lucky stars that I am so blessed as to be able to do this "job"! My dad always said "You have to love what you do!" I honestly never REALLY thought I would find a job which I wanted to get up and go to EVERY morning!

Well, I was wrong! I have found it...and it's sessions like this that tell me it's worth it!

This little doll was a pleasure to photograph. Eleven days of pure sweetness! She hardly fussed and even though dad warned me "Don't take her diaper off...you'll be sorry!"...she only had one little accident and THAT was a piece of cake!

Wow...during the shoot we joked about America's Next Top Model...but seriously after looking at some of these shots...I think she has all sorts of potential!

Congratulations on your senior year Miss L and I hope you love your photos. You were such a sport and your parents were really great!

Speaking of parents...I have to send out some huge props to Miss L's dad who was all sorts of wonderful...and strong to boot! He, without complaint held up a giant reflector in 35 mph winds for 15 minutes at a time!! We must have looked like a motley crue!!

I'm so glad you found me and I had a wonderful time at the shoot!

OK...so the photography part of it has always been a lot of fun. AND I've had the most AWESOME clients. Honestly, every single one of my clients has just been so great.

BUT...when you get to photograph A LOT and get awesome clients on top of it...well...it just doesn't get much better than that!

Little Miss T. just turned one and we decided to celebrate with a cake smash! But before getting dirty I HAD to capture those gorgeous blue eyes! She was a doll, I just wish I could have captured more of that infectious smile!

Little Baby G blessed his family with his arrival 10 days ago. Bless Mom and Dad's heart the entire family has been battling the flu and all sorts of great stuff...can you imagine with a newborn?

OK so the T family had enough confidence in me that they were officially my first "real" maternity session. Seriously, could I have gotten any luckier. The entire family was so fun, easy going...and heck even took direction when I KNOW they thought I had completely lost my mind! The children were absolutely adorable...heck the entire family is gorgeous...so I figure it would have been really hard to make them look bad!

Thank you all so much for allowing me to capture these wonderful memories. Can't wait to meet the little one! You have a beautiful family and I how lucky this guy is to be coming in to such a wonderful and loving family! I hope you enjoy your photos!

A New Year, a New Look!

Happy New Year everybody! Thanks for keeping up with the studio and the work we have done throughout 2008.

To help ring in the New Year right....Chasing Fireflies Photography will be getting a new look. A new logo, a new blog and so many new photos to check out! So keep your eyes open and I'd love to know what you think of the new look. We should be up and running by the end of January!

Also, in an effort to provide all of my clients with the best possible work, I will be attending a Photography Convention in Phoenix, Arizona on January 10th! I'm really excited and will be taking classes and working with some world class photographers! So I hope to come back with some great ideas for 2009!

Tis the Season for Giving

Chasing Fireflies Photography would like to wish a very Merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays to all.

Nothing makes me so happy as to see a smile or tears of joy on a persons face when I deliver to them the photographs from their session! And during this time of the year it makes me all the more happy.

Chasing Fireflies Photography believes that photographs are memories and moments in time which we will never get back. The way your baby looks at the world with a newness only infants know, the look on your one year-olds face as he discovers the wonderful workings of his feet knowing they will carry him to new adventures, the celebration of a lifetimes worth of love between a couple. These are the moments which seem like they will last forever, but we soon find they are gone in the blink of an eye.

These are the moments I love to capture and why I think this is the best job in the entire world. And so, in the spirit of the season I would like to give away a photosession and photo collection to a family who truly deserves this special, unique and wonderful gift.

A Christmas Carol in Raton America

You know looking back through some of these posts, our little town has done some pretty neat things. Too often we get caught up in all of the petty business of our community and forget to give thanks to the truly wonderful opportunties we all have here.

This is yet another example of a fun and unique experience it seems too many miss. Charles Dickenson's "A Christmas Carol" is showing at the historic Shuler Theatre this weekend and next. If you haven't had a chance to check it out, you should definitely make time.

They Better Have Driven the Speed Limit!

This was the VERY FIRST FAMILY I ever photographed and they came in for Holiday Photographs this morning.

Little Bug (the baby...don't worry his parents call him that!) is faster than a speeding bullet...and if not THAT fast I KNOW he's faster than the camera's shutter!!

A lot of smiles and a blast to take photos with...I promised them a sneak peek by the time they got home. So I WAS faster than a speeding bullet picking a favorite photo and editing it in time for their arrival home. SO....they better have not driven faster than the speed limit...or I'm in trouble!

A Gorgeous New Attorney

I am happy to announce the studio is now, well almost, minus some painting, complete! I was so excited to be shooting in it this weekend. I know I've been MIA...but I have been busy preparing for the upcoming Holiday Mini Sessions!

I was so looking forward to my first shoot in the studio and had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful attorney. She is returning to Southern Colorado to practice after attending law school in Wyoming. Now I don't know much about law, but she passed her bar exam on the first try, and from what I understnad that is no small feat. So watch out for her!

A Gorgeous Family

The weather finally gave us a break and I was able to go out and photograph this GORGEOUS family! We were snowed out the first date...that's right snow already! And then rained out for the rescheduled shoot. I had my doubts we were actually going to get this in before the year's end!

S is one of my very best friends. She is a terrific mother, teacher and friend! And I just adore her husband and her son! Aren't they just the cutest darn family! I was so happy we finally got to meet up and they were game for anything. In fact D didn't even question it when I asked him to pull my big green chair out of my car and sit it in the middle of the dirt road. I KNOW he thought I was crazy...but he didn't make a peep! And it sure it nice to have two big strongs guys on a shoot! I'm used to dragging that chair out all by myself and lugging it down a hill with strange glances from all directions!

And they were all so great to work with. Even Mr. L who I definitely know thought I was some crazy woman, just went with the flow. He really is a great kid and very handsome to boot!

I had a great time and it just reminds me why I love what I do and how I couldn't be happier doing anything else.

A Sneak Peek...the Right Way

So...you may have seen my quick post yesterday on my senior session with R. The first words out of her mouth when we met that afternoon were, "I'm really not photogenic!" Do any of you believe her?

I can hardly say these are my favorites from the day as there are SO many to choose from. But these are definitely some great shots! Luckily we had a gorgeous day (after a cancellation due to snow!). Not too hot and not too cold and the sun worked with us perfectly. We timed our arrival by the lake to perfection and got some unbelievably beautiful shots with the setting sun!

Senior Sneak Peek

Ok...well...it's my birthday...and I can't believe I'm already that dreaded 30-something! But, I couldn't be having more fun in finally being able to follow my dreams with this photography business.

That being said I REALLY should be getting ready. My husband and good friends are taking me out to dinner...no kids...what will we talk about?? BUT I couldn't keep myself from downloading all of the photos I took today with this gorgeous senior!

As I was going through these photos I thought...I'll just edit one so R and her mother can get a sneak sneak peek and I just kept editing and editing! There are too many great shots to chose from and I haven't even looked at those last photos we took yet.

This is one of my favorites so far. I just love R's smile in this and the great color we got by the river!

I promise to get more time to go through them tomorrow...but for now this will have to do!

First I have to thank the ladies of Bella Bella for entering into this adventure with me! I had so much fun with these kids! They were COMPLETELY into having their photographs taken and were so good! For being 5 of them....the chaos was very understated! The two girls were budding models and the little twin blondes were just as I imagine twins...when one was on the other was off! But the dark haired little boy stole my photographer's heart with his tough guy attitude!

They all had these wonderfully expressive eyes...and share the same smile!

Location, Location, Location

Some of my FAVORITE sessions are senior sessions!! Seniors take direction well and want to have a great time. It's a wonderful experience to get to know a little about them and really bring their personality out in a photograph.

K has been one of my favorite muses from even before I officially opened my business. She agreed to do this shoot with me to give seniors some ideas of the GREAT locations we have around town to get some funky, fun and "urban" photographs. These locations are some fantastic pockets in town that we easily overlook in our busy lives...but I think they make unique places for senior sessions.

So I'd like to present 2 of my favorites spots (with more to come). Seniors are able to choose a variety of locations. I recommend at least 3, which we can usually complete in 1 1/2-2 hours. More locations results in more travel time and less photos and fewer locations results in more photos but less variety in the backdrops. Although each of the locations I recommend have several unique and funky backdrops!

Location: The Downtown Alleys
.
The alleys are all located within historic Downtown Raton. These locations are all within a 5 block area and have some really great old, grungy, urban, sophisticated backdrops. We can get a variety of backdrops and poses and the locations mesh well with almost any personality.

Best time of day: Anytime. Specific locations may require a specific time of day...but for the most part we have great locations all day long.

Location: The Schoolbus Field

This is a great location! A local Raton couple was gracious enough to allow me to use their property as a backdrop for photosessions. There are a number of backdrops from cozy, small secluded meadows to a more open field all with tall grasses. A great addition...an old school bus with broken windows....a great find to be sure...especially for senior sessions.

Time of day: Early morning, late afternoon. We'll see how it fairs as a backdrop this winter!

Another little sneak peek! I had so much fun photographing these little guys! And I think I made a new friend in the process. She's in the second to last photo...a little spitfire...my kind of lady!

I loved photographing these little ones in their own room. I think they were very proud to show me around and let me take photos of them on their beds!

I know these photos are from a few weeks ago...but I just now got around to editing them.

This has to be about the coolest thing I have ever seen. The fire department hung this gigantic flag from the city's two ladder trucks. I can't say I've ever seen anything this wonderful in all of my travels...and I've been quite a few places. For all of you who have never been to little old Raton...we aren't completely backwoods here. We definitely have some style!

On top of that I'm a sucker for the red, white and blue!

I love early evening photoshoots...lovely light...and my daughter when she gets in the mood! She is so gorgeous!! And I love when I find a beautiful new photo location! Isn't this AWESOME! I've been taking my little one (7 going on 17) to test out some new senior locations. I think this is going to work perfectly...edgy and urban (in our little town)! Who knew!

I also have to make mention of my WONDERFUL yard sale find! This chair...after months of searching...was sitting in the front yard of a lovely couple with the light of heaven shining down on it. I still feel a bit guilty about waiting for my change from a $10.00 bill!

I didn't get your names...but if you found your way here...I hope you see the chair has found a wonderful second life!

OK...so there's a really funny story that goes with this...AND...more great photos. But as soon as I opened this photo, I beamed. Do these eyelashes just melt your heart?

I had such a great time on this photo shoot...8 kids and all! They were so great, and the photos make me smile all over again! I'll be sure to post more really soon!!

Twin Cuties

I photographed these two adorable little 18 month old twin girls a couple of weeks ago! Aren't they dolls?

They made "the cut" for my website and so I've had a few photos on there for awhile. But wanted to give Mom and Grandma a sneek peak before the gallery went up online!

Two Sweet Sisters

Wow...I've taken more photos today then I think I have in my entire life!!!

I finally got my hands on him! And it was worth the wait! What an absolute cutie!

The website is officially launched! Wow, I can't believe I am doing this! I have to say that I'm pretty proud of myself. I think I've found my niche in life...about time at 30 something huh? Had a cool shoot with a local band....Blind Meloncamp. These guys were just about up for anything including climbing on dumpsters and barefooting it down the alley.

Enchanted Grounds

OK...as long as I'm blogging here I have to say thank you to Joan at Enchanted Grounds Coffee Shop!

Both Joan and Pennysue (oh, I hope I spelled that right) are huge promoters of local Raton artists. The last few musicians I have photographed (and a few who's photos will be up shortly) are all playing this summer at the coffee shop. I so recommend that if you are reading this you check out the summer schedule (which I promise to post here) and take a listen to these musicians and check out the art. I've heard a few of them play and they are some pretty talented folks!

Not only that....but the ladies make a mean cup of coffee...and no joke, I'd rather have Enchanted Grounds coffee than a Starbucks anyday and twice on Sundays!

I had the opportunity to photograph another local musician! Daniel was awesome and so much fun to photograph. He wanted a few shots that were not your ordinary "look at the camera and say cheese" photograph, which is always a blast. We got a few fun and funky ones and a few "safe" shots which really showcase his awesome blue eyes!

This young musician was fun, bubbly and very laid back. She has cool hair, a beautiful face and gorgeous eyes all making my job much easier! She brought both her guitar and her violin to the sessions, which I was afraid to touch...because I am very good at breaking things. But both escaped without incident. I got so many great photos...it's hard to pick the ones I want to post process first!
